Size the payroll gap
| Illustration only | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross payroll due Friday | $38,000 |
| Employer payroll taxes (about 8%) | $3,040 |
| Cash in the operating account today | −$21,000 |
| Deposits expected before Friday | −$9,500 |
| Shortfall | $10,540 |
Made-up numbers. ToastFunding's range starts at $25,000. A one-off gap this size may be better covered by a vendor extension, a short delay on a non-payroll bill or a line of credit. Use funding when the need is larger or repeats.
Timing gap or a losing restaurant?
A timing gap looks like this: a slow week, a big catering invoice not yet paid, or a seasonal dip with a normal recovery. A chronic loss looks different: payroll short several times in the last quarter, deposits trending down, and existing funding payments growing as a share of sales. Funding a chronic loss adds a payment to a business that already cannot cover its costs. Look hard at that before you borrow.
If Toast declined or shows no offer
Toast Capital sizes on card volume through Toast. Outside working capital looks at total deposits, so it can still be available. Speed matters for payroll: with 3 months of statements, month-to-date and ID ready, approved restaurants can be funded in as little as 4 hours. If a Toast card-sales split is already running, add the new payment to it and check the total before signing. See already paying a card-sales split.

Questions owners ask
Can I get funding in time for this week's payroll?
Often, if the file is complete early. Approved restaurants can be funded in as little as 4 hours after the agreement is signed. Apply as early in the week as you can.
Is it smart to borrow for payroll?
It can be for a short timing gap. If payroll has come up short repeatedly, fix margins or costs first. Funding will not fix a chronic loss.
Do I need to show my payroll register?
Sometimes. Bank statements usually tell the story, but a payroll report helps size the request accurately.
